Words ending in G are extremely common in English because of the ubiquitous -ING ending. Gerunds and present participles (RUNNING, EATING, WRITING) account for the largest share of English G-endings.
In Scrabble, -ING hooks are legendary for bingo potential. A rack containing I, N, G plus 4 other letters can almost always form a 7-letter gerund: READING, WAITING, LOOKING. Tournament players memorise the 40+ common 7-letter -ING words that emerge from standard tile distributions.
G-ending non-ING words are also common: BAG, BIG, BUG, LOG, PEG. Many classical Greek -OLOGY words technically end in Y not G, but internal -LOG roots generate G-endings via compound-word shortening (LOG, BLOG, SMOG, VLOG).
The count is 20,210 G-final words (5.6% of the dictionary). Tile value: 2 points.
QUIZZIFYING leads at 45 points using TWL scoring. Placing its final letter on a triple-word square while also forming a cross-word is how this kind of play becomes a 50-point turn.
Our shortest G-ending word is AG (2 letters). It’s ideal hook material — dropping it onto an existing word’s last letter creates two words at once.
